Human Rights Initiative of North Texas is an immigration law firm that is free for people who qualify.

What kind of immigration cases do you take?

HRI can only help clients who are not in immigration detention. We cannot assist a person who is detained or in a detention center. Please see the "What Can't You Help With" section below for more information about how to get help if you are detained.

We can help:

Asylum seekers: Asylum is protection for people who are afraid to return to their home country because they believe they will be harmed or will endure suffering because of their identity. If you fear harm if you return to your country, call us to find out whether we can help.

Undocumented survivors of domestic violence: There are some special protections in our immigration laws for undocumented people who have survived domestic violence. Domestic violence includes physical violence, but it can also include extreme psychological or emotional abuse. If you are undocumented and have fled domestic violence, call us to find out whether we can help.

Undocumented survivors or witnesses of serious crimes: There are some special protections in our immigration laws for undocumented people who have survived or witnessed some serious crimes, and who have helped law enforcement investigate or prosecute those crimes. If you have experienced a serious crime and reported it to law enforcement, call us to find out whether we can help.

Undocumented kids who have been abused or abandoned: There are some special protections in our immigration laws for undocumented kids who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one of their parents. If you are a child who came into the U.S. without your parent (sometimes called an unaccompanied minor) or who has experienced abuse at the hands of a parent, call us to find out whether we can help.

HRI serves and supports all clients, regardless of they country they come from, the color of their skin, their language, their religion, their gender identity, their sexual orientation, their disabilities, their age, and their life experience.

Your immigration lawyers are free? What’s the catch?

HRI's clients must live in North Texas, and we can only provide free services to clients whose incomes are at or below 150% of the federal poverty guidelines. If you think you have the type of immigration case that we take, call us to find out whether we can help.

What can’t you help with?

HRI can only assist with the types of cases we’ve listed above. We do not generally help with general immigration cases (naturalization/citizenship) or work-related immigration cases. We also cannot help with general civil rights or human rights cases, criminal cases, cases where someone has been fired from a job, divorce, disputes over child custody, or disputes between landlords/tenants.
