Internships
Human Rights Initiative of North Texas offers competitive Spring, Summer, and Fall internships for graduate and undergraduate interns depending on need. Fall 2021 schedule coming soon.
HRI is seeking legal intern for our summer internship program to support the Crime Victims program. This program provides legal services to immigrants who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, or violent crime. To the extent that Covid-19 protocols allow, our internship you will shadow attorneys who prepare applications for various forms of immigration relief, assist in conducting client interviews, review evidence, draft and review supporting affidavits and other documents and perform legal research. You will have at least one legal writing project (memo or brief) that can be used as a writing sample. HRI’s prior interns rave about the in-depth, real world experience they receive. Through this internship HRI strives to provide every legal intern with invaluable experience in immigration and nationality law and international human rights issues.
Qualifications:
- 2L in law school
- Committed to and enthusiastic about the mission and goals of HRI
- General understanding of immigration and nationality law and/or international human rights issues
- Superior oral and written communication skills
- Computer proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or demonstrate ability to learn computer applications
- Working knowledge of another language in addition to English (optional but preferred - Spanish speakers are especially encouraged to apply
Responsibilities:
- Assist legal department with legal and country conditions research
- Draft memos for the legal department, analyzing research findings
- Work with clients in relation to their legal cases
- Assist with client intakes
- Assist with preparation of in-house cases
- Provide general office support as needed
- Complete various projects which would assist HRI’s legal department in reaching its goals
- Interpret and/or translate documents (if applicable)
HRI is seeking full-time legal interns for our Asylum Program summer internship. The Asylum Program represents refugees who have fled their home countries due to persecution and torture based on their religion, political opinion, race, nationality or membership in a particular social group. To the extent that COVID-19 related protection protocols allow, this program will provide practical, hands-on litigation experience in the area of immigration law and removal proceedings while serving some of the agency’s neediest clients. As our intern you may have the opportunity to shadow attorneys who prepare asylum applications, assist in conducting client interviews and witness preparation, draft and review supporting affidavits, briefs and other documents, perform legal research and attend hearings at immigration court. You will have at least one legal writing project (memo or brief) that can be used as a writing sample.

Qualifications:
- Strong legal research, verbal and writing skills, basic computer literacy; ability to operate independently and remotely
- 2L in law school
- Committed to and enthusiastic about the mission and goals of HRI
- General understanding of immigration and nationality law and/or international human rights issues
- Superior oral and written communication skills
- Computer proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or demonstrate ability to learn computer applications

Responsibilities:
- Assist in conducting client intakes
- Shadow attorneys who prepare applications for various forms of immigration relief
- Assist in conducting client interviews, draft supporting affidavits and outline direct and redirect examinations
- Observe the witness preparation that is crucial in Asylum cases and perform legal research, brief writing, and country conditions research
- Prepare immigration applications

This program assists immigrant children who have suffered abuse, abandonment, or neglect by one or both parents, and for whom it is not safe to return to their home country. To the extent that COVID-19 related protection protocols allow, as a Children’s Program intern you will shadow attorneys who prepare applications for various forms of immigration relief, assist in conducting client interviews, draft and review supporting affidavits and other documents, and perform legal research. You will have at least one legal writing project (memo or brief) that can be used as a writing sample. HRI’s prior interns rave about the in-depth, real world experience they receive.
