HRI Statement: The Haitian Situation

Like many of you, we have watched with horror the images of Border Patrol agents on horseback, striking refugees with their saddle reins. Thousands of Haitian refugees have made their way from their homes seeking safety: they were driven by earthquakes, hurricanes, and political instability, including the assassination of their President. They are met with state violence, not an asylum process that honors their rights.

.

.

As a nation we have legal requirements under international law not to return people to harm. We must comply with those laws and live up to our commitment as a nation to providing refuge for people fleeing safety. Unfortunately, the administration continues with the abhorrent practice of death planes, deporting people to certain harm.

.

.

HRI unequivocally condemn these atrocities that are being committed in our name. We reject the administration’s stance and call on the President to halt all deportations immediately. We life up our colleagues at Haitian Bridge Alliance, UndocuBlack Network and BAJI to advocate for the rights of Black immigrants. Unite with us to amplify their voices and support the Haitians.
