Since the law allowing police officials to detain people who appear to be illegal immigrants and enforce that educational institutions determine legal status of enrolled students in Alabama, much fear has arisen. Not only have children stopped showing up to classes, many workers quit or abandoned their jobs in fear that they may be prosecuted. In the past weeks, few of the jobs that have become available in the construction and agriculture fields have actually been filled by legal U.S. Americans.
Yesterday it was reported that many undocumented immigrants have been meeting with lawyers to try and ensure the future of their children. Many of these immigrants have children who have been born in the United States, and are looking to ensure that their friends and/or family become the legal guardians of their kids in case of deportation.
