TODAY Friday – Jan 29th, 2021 is the second year of the worst policy in American History: Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP). We are so relieved it was ended by the 46th Administration – although, thousands of refugees remain detained in life threatening situation at border country camps. Tonight we are joining community partners across the country to hold a virtual vigil. Join us here.
We have witnessed two years of asylum seekers huddled in makeshift tents in freezing temperatures, of children losing their innocence, witnessing and enduring violence, human rights abuses, and families still being torn apart. All while the Trump administration systemically made cuts to the asylum system through administrative policy changes and chose to hold families hostage at the border. Not only did his admin. turn away asylum seekers at the border through Remain in Mexico, it also forcibly returned them to unsafe third countries in Central America.
Even as we celebrate this victory, we must remember that we still have a lot of work to do. We must continue to hold 46th admin. accountable and we must continue to demand that he keeps his promises. President Biden and his administration must commit to FULLY ending MPP as well as fixing our broken asylum system. Tweet at @POTUS
