Meet the New Legal Intern Katrina!

Over the next couple weeks, we will be introducing our new interns here at HRIKatrina2 and we’d like you to meet Katrina Talavera.  Katrina is currently in law school at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University.  Over the past year, she has focused primarily on public interest law through work with clinics, organizations and other programs at her school.

Katrina, what brought you to HRI?

I spent the last year focusing on immigration law in detained settings and wanted to see what it was like to work with non-detained petitioners. Additionally, I knew HRI had a certain system involving interpreters which I wanted to observe because my language skills are not as good as they could be. I have a deep rooted interest in public interest law in general and wanted to work at a non-profit.

Tell us about a particularly interesting case you have worked on while at HRI.

I have been able to observe and assist with client-witness preparation for an upcoming trial. It was very interesting to be able to see the progress that can be made over two weeks with an individual who has gone through traumatic events. The client went from struggling with the trauma while testifying to being able to testify confidentially. It was a very good experience.

What are your favorite toppings on a pizza?

I really love pepperoni and mushroom pizza.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

If I had a superpower, I would love to have the ability to control the elements around me. Specifically I would like to control  water, earth, air and fire.
