Feb. 21, 2023 – The Biden Administration announced today that it would formally publish its proposed rule to restrict access to the U.S. asylum system. The rule will be officially published on February 23, and comments from the public will be accepted for 30 days. The administration’s clear goal is to fast-track this radical change to asylum access, which could affect thousands of people, is part of a patchwork of policies put in place by the administration to manage the border. It’s among the measures that have put the President in opposition with his own allies who argue that the administration’s approach is reminiscent of Trump-era policies.

HRI strongly condemns this decision. “A refugee is a human being – all human beings deserve the chance to seek safety, regardless of the nature of their passage, what color their skin is, or who they love,” said Brenda Todwong, HRI’s Advocacy Organizer. “Everyone deserves a safe place to live and build a future. People seeking asylum are trying to find that place. Our constitution has always created that safe place for asylum seekers. It’s the right thing to do. It’s how we would want to be treated if the shoe was on the other foot.”

Most migrants transit through another country, if not several, on their journey to the US. The proposed asylum policy will dramatically limit the ability of migrants to claim asylum in the US if they resided or traveled through other countries prior to coming to the US. We must speak up against this cruel policy. We must stand up for Humanity. Follow this link to send a letter to the POTUS and Secretary Mayorkas in a matter of minutes and stand up against this cruel policy.
